A2 Evaluation - Temi Awe
Q1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Titles : I used similar conventions of titles as my influential film by setting the writing over a dark background. by using this effect it allowed the writing to appear clearer and more bold. I also wrote the title of my film in the second title shot as done in my existing film. I saved the roles of the film to the end instead of showing them at the beginning like a lot films tend to do. this also was a feature of my existing film. by following their use of titles as an exemplar as such, it made carrying out my own title work easier and to seem more like. I managed the challenge the conventions of my existing film however by using a different font, one that i felt was more suitable for my film.
Settings & Locations : The location of my film differed significantly from the one in my influential film. As my film was filmed in Levi's household. By doing so it reduced the chances of risks occurring and also we were not able to gain permission to film on public transport which made it difficult to film on a train or bus. However filming inside a house proved to have its benefits in the sound department as it lowered the chances out picking out background noises that we did not purposely want.
Costumes & Props : Costumes were fairly easy to work with as we were able to wear casual clothing to fulfill our roles well. Props were not much of a problem either as it was filmed within a home. Props technology wise, were thankfully provided by my institution so camera's, tri-pod etc were all catered for.
Camera Work : To use the conventions of my existing film I used their use of close angle shots. by doing so it helped my to get a frequent close look at the characters facial expressions. Camera work was fairly hard to work with as their was only two of us starring in the film and no one specifically working on just the camera alone so we had to alternative turns in adjusting the camera. However the fact that their was only two of us allowed us to experiment more with the camera and pick pick up new techniques whilst learning more.
Music/Sound/Dialogue : My influential film has a small amount of music playing at the end of the film. My actual film has similar conventions as it plays music at the start and ending of of film. The music to my film was edited completely from scratch which was made by Levi and Myself. We chose not to make an upbeat song to our film based on the purpose the film was trying to fulfill. The dialogue was made very similar the influential film. We attempted to make it similar in order to make it more realistic. This was done by using similar modifiers and dynamic verb choices.
Editing/Effects : Editing was a convention where i spent a lot of time working on, i found it quite hard to follow similar conventions of editing in my existing film. With this being the case i chose to challenge the conventions slightly instead. However similar to my existing film, the main editing effects featured in the beginning and ending of my film. I chose mainly to use cuts and transitions in my film which also was a frequent feature. Occasionally i would also use the fade feature.
Representation : I believe both films tend to represent their characters in a immature manner. Mainly due to their age, being a teenager and fighting over the opposite sex. Not something that you may see commonly between Adults as much. I tried to keep the representation the same by keeping similar a ethnicity fulfilling the roles of both characters in my existing film.
Genre : The genres from both my films are really similar. They follow a very similar story lines. The similarities are shown mainly through representation of characters despite being of the opposite sexes. The Genre is also shown through the dialogue as well as the script follows very similar conventions in terms of the type of linguistic features it uses.
Q2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJpivmcu3Xs
Q3. What did you learn from audience feedback?
Audience feedback was vital for me because it allowed me to make significant improvements to my film that i did not notice could have potentially been a problem at first. One of the most significant factors which i was able to take from my feedback was to include a variation of shots. As in one of my original drafts to my film I limited myself to only a few amount of shot types and by doing so i did not originally realise that i was potentially limiting myself to only a few marks.
Audience feedback enabled me to also realise the parts of my film which i had really executed well and should try to maintain throughout my film. Such as the effects and editing skills which i must admit i did find fairly challenging to begin with but when i had eventually managed to work my way around it, it came off quite well apparently and it was something i tried to maintain because i felt comfortable eventually with.
Audience feedback i felt was helpful because it allowed me to pick up on faults that i personally was not able to originally realise. I found it helpful especially because it was someone else's view and perspective and by taking that into account i became very objective with my work which eventually allowed people to enjoy it more as i genuinely did listen to the audience.
Audience feedback enabled me to realise what parts of the film were not clear and when i was attempting to portray a specific message, whether it had worked or not.
Overall audience feedback allowed me to notice the good factors about my film and ancillary task and the aspects of my film that could potentially lose me marks or needed to be improved. I found audience feedback very help despite it not always being easy to accept.
Q4. How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Sony Vegas
Sony Vegas is a new media technology that allowed me to construct the editing to my film well. It allowed me to add various effects such as 'Blurr' and 'Fade' effect. Sony Vegas I found helpful to use due to the fact that it had other features to it compared to previous editing tools that I have used such as Premier Pro and Movie Maker. Such as allowing me to upload my film in HD, this I found helpful as it allowed me overall final copy to appear much better.
Audacity
Audacity was another technology feature that allowed me to construct my film well. The programme allowed me to blend sounds together and level the music to my film to ensure that it suited my film.
I found audacity helpful as it allowed me to work with other media products such as a headset and also a microphone. So by having to use audacity it forced me to endeavor into other media products and enhance my knowledge and use of them, which i found helpful later in my film when i needed them to develop other features of my film.
Video Camera
Video Camera helped mainly with my planning and construction of my film. It allowed me to video my film and to practice aspects of my film that I may want to include. It allowed my to try new features out with enabled me to plan round my film better. The Video Camera also allowed me to work with other forms of technology such as computers and YouTube as I would use them via the Camera do upload my products which then led to me editing and collaborating my work pieces together.
YouTube
YouTube played a significant part to my evaluation. It enabled me to use features such as annotations, which showed my range of technology use. It was also good for feed back as people would tell me what aspects of my film they thought worked well and parts they did not enjoy too much.
BBC Films
BBC Films helped me with my research into similar films. It allowed me to stem my initial ideas and give me something to emulate. I found this site helpful for my research as it allowed me to compare and contrast my possible film ideas and features in my film that I may wish to use in my film. It was good because it allowed to see films from a professional point of view and the type of features that i may wish to use to allow my film to appear realistic.
